Q:
I had the most amazing time at Bob's basketball camp during my summer vacation! Every time I won a game, it filled me with so much excitement and pride. It was such a thrill to feel motivated and honored by my success. However, I also learned that winning can make you a bit overconfident and lose your focus against tough opponents. Despite that, I'm completely hooked on basketball! It's addicting, it fills me with pride, it brings me joy, and it's just plain fun! I can't wait to learn more about the nature of basketball and what makes it so awesome!
Bob's Answer:

Bob's Answer:
That’s quite a question! And observation. I’ll try to answer as best I can with some personal experiences.
First of all, basketball is just a game. Invented by James Naismith in 1891 so his athletes could remain indoors during the cold winters in Massachusetts. Since then it has grown into one of the most popular sports in the world. Like any game, soccer, tennis, golf, or chess, how you feel about it depends on your level of success, and whether that game fulfills some need that you have. You get out of it what you are able to put into it. One important thing that I often say at camps, is that, “I love basketball, but what I really love is people who play basketball.”That includes fans, coaches, and anyone who loves this wonderful game.

I love basketball because I love to move and run. I love it because it’s a sport you can practice on your own. I spent hours and hours shooting by myself when I was young. But I also love basketball because it’s a team game, and being on a team is one of the best experiences in the world, learning to cooperate to achieve a goal.
I love basketball because of the incredible creativity available in trying different dribbles, shots, and passes. I love basketball because wherever I went, I could instantly have friends by joining a game. In junior high school, when I moved from Illinois to Michigan, I had friends on my first day of school, in my first class, because I told them I played basketball. Basketball transcends culture and language.
I love the challenge that shooting a basketball provides, and there is no better sound than a swish as the ball sails perfectly through the net! I love basketball because you can dribble and shoot with both your right and left hands. I love basketball because you don’t have to wait your turn to hit like you do in baseball, and you don’t get stuck only playing defense like in American football. If you’re in the game you can always find a way to be involved on offense and defense. I love basketball because there are so many unique players to copy and imitate. I spent hours and hours practicing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s “Sky Hook”because I thought that was the most beautiful shot in the game, and he was my favorite player, although there were many, many others!

When I was really young, I lived in Southern California, and had a skate board, but never was any good at riding it. As a 5-year-old in Toronto, Canada, I played street hockey with all the neighborhood kids. And in elementary school, living in Wheaton, Illinois, I liked all sports, primarily baseball because I liked the Chicago Cubs. Then a new neighbor, who was a basketball coach, put a hoop on his garage for his son Mark. Soon Mark and I alternated between pretending to be the Cubs (I was Ernie Banks!) or the Harlem Globe Trotters.
For my 11th birthday, I was supposed to get a new baseball glove, AFTER I returned from two weeks of camp. The second one was a basketball camp was at Wheaton College with their head coach, Lee Pfund, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to go because I didn’t like the first week of outdoor camp. But when I went to sign up at the college, a young player on the Wheaton basketball team greeted me saying, “Welcome, it’s great to have you here!” That made me want to stay and try my best.

At basketball camp I fell in love with basketball.I learned how to shoot different layups. I learned not to travel or double dribble. I thought that basketball camp was the best thing ever! After the camp was over, I didn’t go with my parents to pick out a new baseball glove, we went to buy a new basketball. Can basketball change your life? I don’t know about anyone else, but it did for me. I was a basketball player from then on.

And now the rest of the story. In 1989 I was the assistant basketball coach at Southern California College and went to work a week at Snow Valley Basketball Camp. Pat Riley’s assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers came to that camp to run the defensive clinics. His name was Randy Pfund, the son of Lee Pfund, and the player who greeted me at the door of the Wheaton College Basketball Camp.I told him my story of going to camp. In the Spring, Randy brought his dad, Coach Lee Pfund, to the NAIA Tournament, and I was able to tell him as well.

Randy Pfund later became the head coach of Lakers for two seasons, then moved to the Miami Heat to join Pat Riley again as the General Manager of the Heat. Randy hired his former assistant with the Lakers, Chet Kammerer, to be the Director of Player Personnel. I knew Chet Kammerer from my five years competing against his Westmont team while I was at Southern California College. In 2015 Chet asked me to scout for the Miami Heat.

That’s a long, winding road from a basketball camp in Wheaton, Illinois to scouting in China for the Miami Heat. But it shows how basketball can change a life. And how important all the people you meet along the way might become! That’s why I put so much energy into every basketball camp I have done in the USA, Spain, Turkey, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and China. Will the next Ball Out Camp change someone’s life? I don’t know, but all the coaches will be doing their best to make sure the answer a resounding, “YES!”
